BBB Advice for Black Friday Shoppers
Do you know if a sale is really a sale? Many times companies boast "70 percent off," but 70 percent off what?

With the approach of Thanksgiving, the Better Business Bureau is offering tips to people planning on doing their shopping on Black Friday -- the day after Thanksgiving.

Shop Local onSmall Business Saturday

In honor of Small Business Saturday (Nov. 26), a day designed to draw attention to small businesses on the busiest shopping weekend of the year, the Better Business Bureau is helping spread awareness of this event by urging consumers to support small businesses in their area.
For the second year in a row, American Express OPEN has declared November 26th, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, to be Small Business Saturday. Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday is a perfect way to support the small businesses that you love. As a joining member, the BBB is teaming up with American Express OPEN to spread the word on why small businesses are so important to healthy communities.

BBB Tips forOnline Shoppers

More and more people are doing their holiday shopping online. A recent National Retail Federation survey revealed the average person plans to do 36% of their holiday shopping online this year -- up from 33% last year. "We know there are often good bargains available online," said Dana Badgerow, CEO of the BBB. "However, we also know there are many problem websites out there and it's important not to get so focused on potential bargains that you fall victim to a scam or a fraudulent website."

The BBB Absolute 'No' for November:Donating Before Investigating

Every month, the BBB informs the public of an absolute 'no,' a fraudulent scheme or offer they should be on the lookout for.
Earlier this month, we received an inquiry from a consumer in regard to a solicitation they had received from United American Patriots, a charity headquartered in Greensboro, North Carolina. The organization said they were soliciting on behalf of an Army family dealing with legal and financial issues, which is fine. However, a review of that charity's finances for 2010 revealed that though they received over $1.7 million dollars in donations last year, they devoted just 17% of their total expenses to program services. In other words, less than $1 of every $5 they raised reached the intended recipients.
According to BBB Wise Giving Alliance Standards, a charity should spend at least 65% of its total expenses on program activities. This holiday season and throughout the year, to ensure the soundness of a given charity and be sure your donations provide the maximum benefit to those you're seeking to help, check out charities at www.give.org before making donations.

Ways You Can GiveThis Holiday Season

Because of technology and the creativity of charities, there are many different ways that donors can give to a worthy cause this Holiday Season. Whether you're giving money, canned goods, used items or your time, the BBB Wise Giving Alliance reminds donors that how you give is just as important as what you give. According to the Giving USA Foundation, total estimated charitable giving in the United States rose 3.8 percent in 2010 (2.1 percent adjusted for inflation). The increase reflects the continued determination of Americans to support charitable organizations during even the most challenging economic times.
"With a tight budget this Holiday Season, it will be important for donors to be creative when giving back and supporting those who are less fortunate," said Dana Badgerow, CEO of the BBB. "When looking to make a contribution, it's important to keep in mind there are many ways you can make a difference."
